As Spring Break season approaches, it’s time to think about activities to keep the kids occupied during a full week without school.  The Rocket City alone has many places to go, and Huntsville is close enough to Nashville and Birmingham for a quick day trip!

We at Rocket City Local have drummed up some ideas that are fun for all ages.  So bring on Spring Break, and let’s go!

Huntsville

I regularly write about Huntsville’s Lowe Mill because there is so much to do in one place!  Is your kid always making pot-holders on a loom?  Try Amy Shelton and Roo Kline’s Sparkle Studio.  Amy and Roo offer mixed media classes ranging from $5-$25, and your kids will have fun making crafts from plant and animal-based fiber. The Mint Julep Difference

I visited Mint Julep Market on a rainy Saturday afternoon—the perfect day for browsing their bounty of upscale gifts from local artisans. The collaborative team at Mint Julep Market works very hard to offer a unique shopping experience to their customers, and that’s just what I got. Although the market has 15 curators, each one has intimate knowledge of all the gift collections.

Mint Julep owner and mother of three, Hillary Dunham, told me, “The people we work with are experts in their field.  They bring exceptional things from all over the world back to Huntsville.  They’re a wonderful and fun group of people to work with.”

It’s fair to say that Mint Julep operates far outside the box.  In one large, open area, you

I’m writing this on a cold February evening, but shortly, and nearly imperceptibly, the season will begin making its small changes. Trees will thicken, deceptive icy patches will melt into harmless, shallow puddles, and the temperature will gradually increase to once again accommodate life. This change back to what I consider to be the South’s natural state coincides with sprucing up the front yard or adding some plants to your apartment’s balcony. After all, Huntsville is a city, but it’s a southern city. So let’s get the shears and sunhats out and visit some greenhouses.

It was probably ten years ago when I first heard of Walls of Jericho, a forested ravine where it’s said Davy Crockett once hunted, in southern Franklin County, Tennessee, 12 miles south of Winchester. A friend had rated it highly for its level of challenge and awesome natural beauty, created by the waters of Turkey Creek.

The Nature Conservancy chapters of AL and TN initiated the moves to acquire and reopen this land, which had previously been open to the public until the late 1970s, when it was closed by a private timber company. In 2006, over 21,000 acres straddling the Tennessee/Alabama border were made contiguous, and now the state of Tennessee owns the Walls as part of the Bear Hollow Mountain Wildlife Management Area.

We here at Rocket City Local have referenced Huntsville’s growth many times. Much of the movement into Huntsville is related to our growing tech and aerospace industries. However, one thing that families must consider when assessing a move for work is the quality and availability of high quality schools for their children. Considering this, the growth of the city is a testament to the quality of schools in the area, and Madison Academy is one such school.

The School

Madison Academy is a “Christian-based private school” with AdvancEd and National Christian School Association accreditation. The academy combines an academic curriculum with a spiritual foundation to provide a balanced education. Madison Academy is a member of the Student Exchange

Are your children tired of this winter weather and have built up energy that can only be expelled by extended use of play equipment? I know this is the case at my house with my boys.  School age children like my 8 year don’t experience this as often with sports and activities like Martial Arts, younger children that aren’t old enough for activities aren’t as lucky.

Many times the younger children that stay home with mom or go to daycare get lots more indoor time and not enough time to run out their excessive amount of energy! Let’s Play Huntsville can provide the perfect indoor place for your children to burn off their extreme energy in a stimulating and enjoyable environment. Let’s Play Huntsville’s unique play area fosters imagination play by

Matt Curtis Real Estate has just helped you find your dream home in Rocket City, but you might have one small problem.  Many times you find your dream house, but the back yard is what you could consider a blank slate.  It might be a simple concrete patio and beautifully growing grass, nice, but not what you would consider an outdoor living space. Across The Pond has everything you need to transform your backyard into the outdoor living space of your dreams.

Across the Pond started as a 900 square feet water garden store ran out Treavor Cole’s landscape offices.  It was born of Treavor’s love for backyard ponds.  Customer kept coming and asking for a large variety of products.  In 2003, Across the Pond opened and now has 24,000 square feet of retail

Matt Curtis from Matt Curtis Real Estate, Inc. has spent the last week in Nicaragua, Central America, working with the country’s capital city of Managua’s local Habitat for Humanity chapter to build a house for a family in a nearby village. Matt Curtis Real Estate builds a home for a family in need for every 100 houses sold, and this is the first of 60 homes planned to be built in Nicaragua this year, with much of the summer slated for construction.

Between the build, meeting the mayor of Managua and the national Habitat for Humanity director, and buying ice cream for the entire village, Matt’s been a busy guy this past week.

Frank, the director of Habitat for Humanity in Nicaragua, joined in a Facebook live session with Matt to thank home

Go into any boutique, and you’re likely to find those wildly popular bath bombs. Well, guess what? Rocket City Local found a web site that teaches us all how to make the things!

What exactly is a bath bomb?

I know, we live near Redstone Arsenal and hear something exploding there at least once a week.  After you’ve lived in Huntsville long enough, what sounds like an explosion doesn’t even make you bat an eye anymore.

But I’m talking about a bath bomb, the size of a golf ball or baseball, that goes into your bath and makes it all fizzy.  Bath bombs also make Mom’s skin smell good and feel like silk. They’re lots of fun, trust me!

A gift that your kids can make!

Ask any mom, and she’ll probably tell you that her favorite gifts are made by

Oddly enough, Thai restaurants are few and far between so it Is always nice to find a restaurant that specializes in Thai food and not a “fusion” that incorporates Thai qualities. The cuisine of Thailand is spicy, deceptively simple, and light. Luckily, Decatur has a Thai restaurant that is as close to Thai food as you can get without hopping on an airplane.

Menu Items

Green Leaf has modestly priced meals with a wide variety of flavors and spices from which to choose. Their list of curries are unique and varied from mild for the uninitiated to extremely spicy for the experienced. Green Leaf also has an impressive sushi selection that from Nigri Sushi to Sashimi. If you are a sushi lover Green Leaf is definitely the place for you.
