Huntsville Lands Space Command
Did you hear that the Rocket City was selected to become the home to the Space Command Center? Not only did Huntsville recently beat out cities in Colorado for the number one city in the U.S. to live in, which was reported by the U.S. News and World Report, but their selection for the U.S. Air Force Space Command was also recently confirmed as a fair process over these Colorado cities.
It sounds very fitting to have Space Command in the Rocket City, but what exactly is Space Command? Space Command was first established in December of 2019 when it became the sixth branch of the U.S. military which made it the first new branch to be added in 73 years. The establishment of the United States Space Force was a result of a recognition that space was a national security imperative and that the United States needed to have a branch solely focused on pursuing expansion and superiority in space.
However, it wasn't without a fight that it landed in Huntsville. In 2021, the U.S. Air Force decided to move the command center along with its 1,400 staff members, from Colorado Springs, Colorado to Huntsville, Alabama. Our area ranked higher than Colorado in 11 of the 21 metrics including available and qualified workforce, proximity to supporting space organizations, and room for this massive 464,000 square foot headquarters.
The challenge to this decision came when former President Trump made a claim on a local Alabama talk show called “Rick and Bubba” that he “single-handedly” made the call to make the move to Redstone Arsenal. This resulted in the current situation where Colorado and Alabama are currently at odds in the fight to house this new branch of the U.S. military.
The Department of Defense’s Inspector General found the decision to move the U.S. Space Command to Huntsville complied with both law and policy. Now the final step for confirming Space Command is underway with a mandated environmental examination on the Redstone Arsenal site. We would like to welcome the future Space.
