The Christmas and New Year holidays are finally behind us, and hopefully you have been able to get all your holiday décor packed back up and stowed away in the basement or attic.  For many, this leaves your home feeling a little empty or drab.  The New Year is the perfect time to give your home some attention and spruce up your décor.

Your home is your living space and should be decorated to your unique style. My home is extremely unique since it is made from 1800s logs from TN and re-constructed in Madison County, AL in the 1970s. Rocket City is very lucky to have a plethora of unique shops that can help you furnish your home with distinctive décor that will be aesthetically pleasing while showing characteristics of your personal style.

Letting go of things can be tough. I know there’s the book about “Does it bring you joy?”, but I tend to ask, is it particularly beautiful, particularly useful, or both? If it’s none of those, it’s gotta go.

Spring is a prime time to start thinking about clearing out things that are no longer particularly beautiful or useful in your home... but perhaps might spark joy in someone else's home? It is also great to make a little cash on the things you let go. Spring is around the corner and it’ll soon be time to open windows, air out the house, and maybe toss or sell a few things that are only collecting dust and creating work for you anyway.

My wife and I have recently used the Facebook “marketplace” to great effect to sell a dog kennel, set of…

The citizens of Huntsville, especially people with children, are extremely fortunate to have the Space and Rocket Center. They consistently incorporate world-renowned exhibits and activities from museums and other institutions into their facilities. This allows children and families in the Rocket City opportunities that are more or less exclusive (in regards to their frequency and overall consistency) to Huntsville. It’s quite a feat to successfully merge fun and educational experiences, and that is something that the USSRC does very well. Spark!Lab is a perfect example.

What is the Spark!Lab?

Created by the Smithsonian Institution’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and InnovationSpark!Lab is where technology, engineering, and fun become…

The Search for Quality Pet Care

My friend Michelle was in a quandary.  Her family was driving to west Texas to visit family during the holiday, and she needed someone local to care for her high-maintenance fur baby, Rip.

Rip is not an easy pet.  Old age is his main issue.  He’s prone to getting sick and must be given pet meds and shots.  Michelle has boarded him before, but they only took him outside twice for bathroom breaks.  So, Rip was not happy at the kennel—and honestly…who can blame poor Rip? Michelle was at her wit’s end.  It’s not easy to find quality pet care.  Especially at Christmas!

The Solution: Pet Au Pair Extraordinaire & Petz Pack

I wish I’d known about Pet Au Pair Extraordinaire and Petz Pack when Michelle was asking for…

In my experience there is no event more frustrating, energy-sapping, and just plain unpleasant than moving from one living space to another. When I first moved out of my parents house I took EVERYTHING that I have ever owned. The next time I took mostly what I needed, but plenty of superfluous items.

The last time I moved I got rid of everything that I couldn’t take in one trip… In (nearly immediate) hindsight that was not a great plan. It took almost a year to fill the space out in the new apartment. Huntsville being one of the fastest growing cities in the country has people steadily migrating into this unique little slice of the South. For anyone thinking of moving to the Rocket City but dreading the move, College Hunks Hauling Junk are a highly…

A Library for the 21st Century.

This isn’t the library of times past when book-stamping Marian Madam Librarian (Shirley Jones) rebuked Professor Harold Hill (Robert Preston) with a persistent “Shhhh!!” in Morton DaCosta’s 1962 film version of Music Man.

The 21st Century library is more like a community center with plenty of relevant programs to draw its patrons.

But First, a Little Madison, Alabama History.

Most of us have heard that Madison was something like a two-light town before its expansion prior to 1990. The city had 15,000 people, according to the city’s web site.  By 2010, our town had grown at rocket speed to 43,000!

The Huntsville/Madison County website says the current library opened 20 years ago to serve 22,000 people.…

Escape rooms are a relatively new concept that have become increasingly popular over the last few years. At first it seems odd that such a thing would become so popular in our society of screens and isolation. This, I think, is why escape games have grasped the imagination of so many. Trapped in Decatur is one such escape room that has started gaining more popularity over the past year.

Escaping the rooms requires quick-thinking, team work, and communication skills that you might not rely on everyday. The rooms conjure up these foundations of human interaction and condense the experience into an hour-long pressure cooker style adventure that will leave you saying “No way that was 60 minutes! …Let’s do another one.” If you went and checked out our…

Although the Alabama Athletic Club no longer offers indoor rock climbing, there are still a couple of places to climb in Huntsville.

For south siders, there’s Up A Creek Indoor Family Adventures in Hampton Cove. Opened in 2012, Up A Creek has a 3 course rock climbing wall (as well as a mechanical surf machine!) . . . they get great reviews on Facebook, check their page for hours and party/event info.

The Little Gym of Huntsville is a kids (12 and under) playspace that Google turns up in a search for Huntsville rock climbing, but their website doesn’t indicate they have a wall, and I can’t find one in any of their Facebook pictures.

The serious looking indoor rock climbing opportunity in these parts, however, appears to be in Madison and the
